### What is your artist name? SawZer ### Could you tell us something about yourself, whereabouts, etc.? My name is Justin, I'm currently living in Fort Worth, TX, and I've been using SunVox for the last 10 years. ### Tell us an early memory about software & electronic music I remember downloading this free MIDI sequencer (I don't remember the name of it or how long ago this was) because I was always interested in writing my own music. I played trombone back in middle school (around age 10-14), and the idea of writing down my own songs onto sheet music paper really appealed to me. I still remember the first phrase I wrote that sounded exactly how I imagined it when my tutor played it. Oh, by the way, I made TERRIBLE music with that sequencer—thankfully none of it is online! ### Why did you start using SunVox, and what did you use before that? Eventually, I realized the MIDI sequencer wasn't working for me, so I started looking for other free software to make music. I came across **PXTone**, which is an app written by Pixel, the creator of *Cave Story*! It was pretty cool and had more potential than the sequencer did. For instance, it had sample support, and you could also create some basic PCM-style single-cycle instruments. I made a few tracks with it, and they're still terrible—and they *are* online... If you really want to know how to find them, ask me. ### Morning-person or Night owl? (or both?) Naturally a night owl, but I'm trying to make this morning thing work!... ### Any particular inspiring SunVox song (by someone else) to mention? There are a lot of fantastic SunVox songs being created by the community, but in truth, the most inspiring SunVox songs for me were the ones **NightRadio** included in the examples folder. I had them rendered out into audio, and I would play them on loop for HOURS. My favorites are **Mechanical Heart** and **Pixel Cave**. ### Which keyboard shortcut is your favorite or most used one? **CTRL +/-**! I'm constantly changing the pattern step size. ### Dark, light, colorful, or default SunVox color scheme? **DARK.** I'm trying to dark mode everything these days. Gotta save my eyes from a lot of strain. ### SunVox contains some of your effects/synths. Which do you use the most? Of those distributed with SunVox, the modules I use the most are **HyperChorus, Phase16 Manual, and Retro PWM**. ### Do you have new effects/synths in the making? If so, could you tell us about them? **SunVoxer MonoBen** and I are working on some "guitar effects pedal" style modules. They should be released soon. ### Tell us a good book, article, or movie that inspired you. **Blade Runner!** And the book it's based on, *Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?* Fantastic speculative fiction, and the movie has a really cool aesthetic. ### Do you use MIDI a lot for SunVox? Why or why not? I have a 49-key MIDI controller, but unfortunately, it takes up about 60% of my desk. I haven't used it in a while—I mostly just use my computer keyboard. ### Do you still use audio samples besides synthesis? All the time. I use them for **drums, vocal effects, sweeping effects (sometimes), and for modulation**. ### Which SunVox feature was introduced over time that made you very happy? **COMPRESSOR**—yeah, I know, I'm old... ### Five years into the future: Which features would you like to see in SunVox? - Proper implementation of **polyphony** for modules like the **Modulator**. - Proper **ADSR**. That's all I really want. ### What are your plans for the future music-wise? I still plan on making music, and I'm going to try to make more **dubstep** (it's fun to play with modulation). As for modules, **SunVoxer Autumn Cheney** and I have been working on a proper **Roland Juno 6 emulation**. It still needs some work, but hopefully, that'll be released soon. ### Which musical genres do you like / are influencing you? I'm into all sorts of stuff! I basically grew up on **classic rock and 80s pop**, but I also like: - Some **metal** - Some **old country** - Plenty of **electronic styles**: **dubstep, drum and bass, electro, and synthwave** My biggest influence out of all those is **synthwave**. Think of it as a modern take on old **80s pop, synthpop, and synth-driven soundtracks**. ### Where can people follow your latest software and/or music releases? My **SoundCloud**: [soundcloud.com/sawzer](https://soundcloud.com/sawzer) I'm also active on the **SunVox Music Discord**, and my own server, **SunVox SandBox**. **SunVoxer Queries** is working on another module library website that I'm active on, called [sunvox.audio](https://sunvox.audio). ### Thank you! By the way, here's one of SawZer's songs called **[Phantom](/module/song/sawzer-phantom)**.
