Just came back from FOSDEM2026 conf, one of the biggest opensource conference in Europe (check all talks here: https://video.fosdem.org/2026/). What was great to see: RISC-V processors (which lower geopolitical tensions) are [now also supported](https://deepcomputing.io/) by (the beautiful) Framework laptops. Right off the bat, here are the most significant talks related to XR: * https://mirror.as35701.net/video.fosdem.org/2026/h1302/T38AKM-monado-and-beyond.mp4 * https://ftp.belnet.be/mirror/FOSDEM/video/2026/h1302/MMTW7N-openxr-advances-open-source-gaming.mp4 * https://mirror.as35701.net/video.fosdem.org/2026/h1302/TBFSCP-slimevr.mp4 and this might impact WebXR indirectly: * https://mirrors.dotsrc.org/fosdem/2026/h1302/NKWMN9-modern_network_protocols_--_whats_next_for_firefox_and_the_web.mp4 * https://mirror.as35701.net/video.fosdem.org/2026/h1302/XGKCJU-building_quic_multipath.mp4 # XR recap Unfortunately, my stand was canceled since they ran out of capacity (amount of people was crazy). I was able to hand out quite some personal cards (with XR Fragments / janusweb on it, incl. a QR to a janusweb room). > Next year strategy: dont bother with submitting talk or stand-request, just go put janusweb posters nearby interesting talks. Regarding VR/AR/MR: I did not came across AR/MR projects, except [overte](https://overte.org/index.html) which is cool, sortof an opensource secondlife (for desktop). Then there was [luanti](https://www.luanti.org/en/) which is a cool desktop-voxel-engine, and ofcourse the beautiful [veloren](https://veloren.net/). > Bottomline, there was nothing like janusweb, which can more or less do all these things and more via URLs (support VR headsets / handcontrollers / gamepad etc). # Perception or VR/AR/MR I've had many conversations on VR with various (non)tech people. My impression is that people **think** they tried VR/AR/XR, but their memories are from the pre-quest era (cardboard/pokemon GO). > So **when** they actually **experience** hand-tracking UI's, they're blown away. This reveals somewhat the 'priesthood'-trap of current VR/AR/XR headsets: one can only know by experiencing it. There were also people who 'don't know what to do with their Meta Quest 3 headset'. My feeling was that they have never been really interested in VR/XR and/or the dumbed-down appstore-interface simply crippled their imagination of XR's potential. # Valve / Steam (Frame) There was a huge optimism regarding Valve boosting the Linux ecosystem, which brought in gamers who are now contributing to Linux. The Frame headset, being the first tinkerable Linux headset, seems to depart from the historical appstore-first webxr-for-tinkering concept. > The implications could be huge (passing around XR applications as AppImage-files, various XR desktop-managers), all with native performance. This could also be great for workshops (start experience on boot), which is very hard to do otherwise (even with non-retail Meta headsets). ________________________________________________________________________________ L Ξ Ο N V Λ N Κ Λ Μ Μ Ξ N Creative technologist & researcher #FOSS #commons ▹ @lvk@mastodon.online (fediverse) ▹ http://leon.freshrss.isvery.ninja (aggregated RSS feed of activities) ▹ https://2wa.isvery.ninja ▹ https://x.com/coderofsalvatio ▹ https://www.linkedin.com/in/leonvankammen ▹ curl isvery.ninja/blog
