The answer lies not in the standards themselves, but in their environments. # Unlocking Innovation through Balance As the creator of XR Fragments, a pioneering standard for deeplinking and deeploading 3D files, I'm discovering (at least I think) the power of harmony in standardization. This journey has also revealed a broader truth: to truly accelerate progress, we must rebalance the scales between explicit and implicit standards. # Two different enviroments 1. **Explicit Standards**: Often born in meticulous, slow-paced, and bureaucratic settings, ensuring stability but potentially stifling agility. 2. **Game Engines**: Driven by urgency, innovating rapidly, unencumbered by pedantic review processes, yet often keeping their standards tacit. The roadmap of explicit standards, tend to revolve around participation in corporate consortium (and therefore corporate alignment). Game engines however, are rapid iterations of 1 company. > Why these extremes? Perhaps it can be explained as 'spec is law' vs 'code is law'? What about 'hermenuetic heuristics is law'? # ZIP (or a directory) as AGILE metaformats How could I create a media metaformat, which has voice-narration, subtitles, and some 3D graphics. Without locking it into specific fileformats too much. Is it realistic to say "support popular media/3D fileformats, with at least `.ogg`, `.srt` and `.gltf`"? > are you now describing MP4/OGG containerformats? Not sure, because we can't include a new fileformat X, because it's not part of MP4's ISO/IEC 14496-14 standard? Conversion of fileformat X to an mp4-supported one might lose important data.. > are you now describing ZIP? Maybe, because ZIP is a more liberal & widely supported container format. Combined with [sidecar files](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidecar_file) there could be enough implicit (filename) metadata to describe a standard. # What are you saying? I guess I'm saying, it would be great if standards would allow for implicit extensions as well. For example: * I know that my VLC player supports the .xm multitrack musicformat * I know that my VLC player supports display a .png image * I know that my VLC player supports display a .srt image > when `foo.png` and `foo.xm` and `foo.srt` are in the same directory, why not play all of them at once? # What implicit standards could promote * **Agility Champions**: Implicit standards, typically crafted by individuals, foster a culture of rapid experimentation and innovation. * **Collective Wisdom**: They embody the shared experiences of practitioners, distilled through real-world challenges. * **Relevance Guaranteed**: Implicit standards evolve organically, ensuring they remain pertinent in a fast-changing landscape. > **A Pluralist Approach to Standardization**: Let's not pit explicit against implicit standards. Instead, let's integrate both, creating a resilient framework that: * Marries Stability with Agility * Empowers Diverse Contributors * Accelerates Progress * Lessons from XR Fragments * Our experience with XR Fragments has shown that: ________________________________________________________________________________ L Ξ Ο N V Λ N Κ Λ Μ Μ Ξ N Creative technologist & researcher #FOSS #commons ▹ @lvk@mastodon.online (fediverse) ▹ http://leon.freshrss.isvery.ninja (aggregated RSS feed of activities) ▹ https://2wa.isvery.ninja ▹ https://x.com/coderofsalvatio ▹ https://www.linkedin.com/in/leonvankammen ▹ curl isvery.ninja/blog
